Ipamorelin after bowel surgery: why the nonsignificant result matters

A phase 2 trial did not find a significant improvement in its key efficacy endpoint.

Clinical trialPaper year: 2014Ipamorelin

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

This multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled 117 adults undergoing bowel resection. The key efficacy measure was the time until a standardized solid meal could be tolerated; adverse events were also monitored.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

The median time to a tolerated meal was numerically shorter with ipamorelin, but the difference was not statistically significant. The investigators found no significant differences in the key or secondary efficacy analyses.

03 / LIMITS

How should it be interpreted?

A numerical difference alone does not establish efficacy. The authors described a small proof-of-concept study with a heterogeneous surgical population. Its hospital setting and study formulation do not support personal-use recommendations or claims about catalog materials.
